Early Life and Education
Henry Clay was born in 1777 in Hanover County, Virginia.
From a young age, he exhibited a passion for oratory and would practice his speeches in the stable to his horse.
Legal and Political Career
Clay's legal and political career began in Kentucky, where he established a successful practice in Lexington.
He was elected to the Kentucky Constitutional Convention at the age of 22 and to the state legislature four years later.
Service in the Senate
In 1806, Clay was elected to a vacant seat in the U.S. Senate. After serving a year, he returned to Kentucky.
In 1810, he was again elected to the Senate, where he became a leading advocate for war with England.
